Not so long ago China was off limits to Americans, not to mention college students. Today, international study programs are reaching into all corners of the globe, including China. If you are shopping for scholarships, you’ll find plenty. In fact our list is only the tip of the iceberg and is intended to underscore the options available. You might study almost any field of study, such as arts and culture, religion, business and technology and a range of other programs lasting a summer, semester or entire year in China.
Government Scholarships
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships reward over 700 academically talented and financially needy students annually. The very competitive program is designed to prepare the next generations for international collaboration and instill a more global viewpoint. Gilman Scholars must be Pell Grant recipients and interested in an innovative and challenging study abroad program in China. Awards are up to $7,000.
David L. Boren Scholarships are designed to train American students in non-traditional languages and cultures or allow applicants to study fields related to the sciences and business in an international context. Preference is really shown for those who may be interested in a career in national security. Funded by the feds, this is a scholarship for service award, meaning you get a year of scholarship funds; you work for a year in the federal government, ideally using the knowledge you’ve gleaned. Up to $26,000 in scholarship money is possible.
Private Funding
The Asian Cultural Council is internationally recognized for its pursuit of creative collaboration across international borders, especially between American and Asian artists and scholars. The ACC sponsors many different fellowships for those artists who wish to spend time in a variety of Asian locations. However, for those interested in working or studying in China, the Hong Kong Arts Program provides generous financial opportunity in the form of fellowships. Thanks to a handful of organizations close to a dozen fellowships are awarded annually that fund up to a year of work or study in China.
The Freeman Awards for Study in Asia are among some of the most popular scholarships for students pursuing study abroad programs in China and other Asian countries. The purpose is to promote the experiences possible in this part of the world. Western students, thanks to generous funding from the Freeman Foundation now have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a very different language and culture. Participants are expected to benefit in their lives and careers from the experience. Applicants must be undergraduates with solid academic records and financial need. Awards are given for summer, semester and academic year programs. Up to $7,000 is given.
The Henry Luce Foundation specializes in providing generous opportunities to graduate level students whose professional goals will benefit from a stint of time in China. Luce Scholars are handpicked from among a long list of those nominated by participating colleges and universities- over 65 of them- and provided with a year’s worth of scholarship funding for study in China.
Fogarty/Ellison Clinical Research Training Fellowships are designed for medical students whose educational and career focus is on the health sciences, specifically in clinical research. The fellowships provide eligible applicants with funding toward a fellowship in China or one of a dozen or so other countries. Fellowships cover a year of study and research.
Study Abroad Organizations
The School for International Training is one of the leading study abroad providers. Among its innovative programs SIT has designed two completely different China programs: “Yunnan Province Language and Cultures,” and “Public Health and Traditional Chinese Medicine.” SIT scholarships for these programs include:
- SIT Asia Fund specifically awards students scholarships based on academic record, interest in Asian studies and demonstrated financial need.
- SIT Fund scholarships are widely disbursed for all kinds of SIT programs. Awards are based on academics and financial need.
- Diversity Fund scholarships are given to those students whose populations are most underrepresented in study abroad programs that have traditionally catered to white, upper middle class student clientele.
- HBCU Fund scholarships are awarded to those eligible participants from a historically black college.
The Beijing Language and Culture Study program through the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) gives students a thrilling opportunity in a once forbidden city. Applicants for the program are immersed in a fast-paced language program in which they are also surrounded by the culture of China. Scholarships available for this month-long program are limited to the AIFS International Scholarships. These awards are widely disbursed to those applicants whose academics are notable and who require financial assistance. Awards are $500.
College Scholarships
NYU has recently added a compelling and very popular semester abroad in Shanghai, which is not only engaging, but also costly. The program is open to students outside NYU and they may apply for the Specialized Study Scholarships that award $2,000 that could really help offset the cost of the Shanghai program.
