People interested in majoring in entomology have a passion for the study of insects. They may conduct research dealing with insects that are helpful to humans or those that are harmful to either humans or their livestock. Entomology graduates may choose to work in such areas as the food industry,crop consulting, the military, or a Department of Health or Natural Resources.
In order to assist entomology students in paying for their education, scholarship funds are available. Perhaps one of the following will be of interest to you:
The Izaak Walton League of America
Undergraduate students (juniors or seniors) from anywhere in the United States majoring in entomology can apply for scholarship funding from the Izaak Walton League of America. Up to two-$2,500.00 scholarships will be awarded each year. The scholarship funds are to be used for tuition, room and board, or books.
The Entomological Foundation of America
The Stanley Beck Fellowship is offered to undergraduate and graduate students in the United States, Canada, or Mexico. It is geared specifically to students who are pursuing studies in entomology in spite of physical limitations, lack of financial means, environmental conditions, or being a member of a minority group. The amount of funding provided varies from year to year.
BioQuip Products offers an undergraduate scholarship each year. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage students to pursue this area of study.
Georgia Entomological Society
Graduate students who are members of the Georgia Entomological Society and planning on majoring in this subject area at a U.S. college or university are invited to apply for one of the $500.00 scholarships offered annually. Applicants are asked to submit two letters of recommendation (one from the institution they are attending and one from a GES member who is a professional entomologist), proof of graduate school status, and a curriculum vitae.
University of Maryland, Department of Entomology
Undergraduates students are invited to apply for the Cory Scholarship. Each semester, two students will receive a tuition credit of up to $1,000.00.
University of Arkansas, Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences
Several Department Scholarships are offered to entomology majors. The amount of funding offered varies for each scholarship, as do the eligibility requirements.
University of Florida
UF offers two full-tuition scholarships to students completing their last 60 hours of an undergraduate degree in entomology. In order to be considered for this source of funding, applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.3 and maintain that level of achievement while receiving scholarship funds.
In addition to a completed application form, interested persons are asked to submit an official transcript and two letters of recommendation from college professors.
Purdue University, Department of Entomology
The Department of Entomology offers 15-20 scholarships to freshman students, continuing and transfer students each year. The criteria for selecting recipients varies depending on the award; however, the minimum GPA required to be considered is 2.5. In addition, the applicants’ character and level of financial need are taken into consideration. The amount awarded ranges from $500.00-$2,000.00.
