The fields of Health and Physical Education offer education students many directions in which to explore. The image of coach/health teacher is all but antiquated. Most physical education departments at elementary, secondary and higher education institutions are comprised of a team of highly educated professionals.
If you're exploring scholarship opportunities in the field of physical education you will find many. Related fields of study for physical education students include exercise science, nutrition health, and kinesiology. Education curricula include physical education pedagogy at the elementary, secondary and collegiate level; issues in health, nutrition, and family education; and recreation. Common degree levels are Bachelors or Masters.
Scholarships
Northwestern Oklahoma State University awards the following scholarships to students in the Health and Physical Education Department:
- C.L. Dick Highfill Scholarship is awarded first and foremost to students who are pursuing teaching careers in health and physical education, including coaching. Applicants must be residents of Oklahoma to be considered.
- W.D. and Lucille B. Newby Scholarship Award goes to an outstanding undergraduate student in the continuing education program. Applicants must be working toward a degree in Health and Physical Education or an associated discipline. A combination of academics and leadership skills are important in the selection process.
Northern Illinois University College of Education offers many scholarship options for students majoring in Physical Education; here is a sampling:
- John Johansen Scholarship in Education goes to COE students majoring in physical education or K-12 education.
- Teacher Education Scholarships are given to a range of education majors including physical education.
- Miriam Anderson Scholarships are awarded solely to undergraduates in the Physical Education program.
- Judith Bischoff Scholarships recognize outstanding students in the Kinesiology and Physical Education major.
- Margaret May Duncan Scholarships are awarded to a female major in the Kinesiology and Physical Education department. Applicants must exhibit superior academics.
- Sharon Ann Plowman Physical Fitness/Exercise Physiology Research Fund is awarded to an academically accomplished graduate student in the Kinesiology and Physical Education Department.
Eastern Kentucky University awards a large number of teaching scholarships, among them the following for Health and Physical Education majors:
- Rome Rankin Athletic Awards are given to students majoring in Physical Education. Selection is based less on merit than on aptitude for teaching or coaching.
- Fred Darling Scholarships are awarded to students majoring in Health or Physical Education. Qualified applicants must exhibit stellar leadership and teaching skills.
Students majoring in Physical Education or a related major at Minnesota State University may qualify for any one of a dozen applicable scholarships. These are a few:
- Gwen Elings Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding female in the Physical Education department.
- Dorothy Kennemer PE Scholarship goes to a Physical Education major specializing in K-12 PE.
- Joan McKracken Education Scholarships are given to notable students in the Physical Education or Movement Science programs.
