College Aid for North Carolina Students
Selling Yourself for Financial Gain
North Carolina is known for farming, textiles, and furniture-making industries; it also has a variety of scholarship and grant opportunities for students willing to do a little leg and paperwork.
Needs-Based
Offered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority, the North Carolina Student Incentive Grant (NCSIG) is available to North Carolina residents who will be full-time students at a North Carolina college or university. (However, they cannot be enrolled in career prep for a religious vocation.) The award is currently at $700, and financial need must be proven by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
If you, a parent, or a spouse is employed by the state; you're planning on attending a North Carolina technical school, trade school, community college, or four-year university; and you need financial assistance, you may be eligible to apply for the State Employees Association of North Carolina (SEANC) Scholarship. Awards are between $500 and $1000; they are nonrenewable, but you can reapply for them each year.
Similarly, the State Employees' Credit Union Foundation "People Helping People" Scholarships - Public University Program is offered to public sector employees and their families. Each scholarship can be as much as $10,000 over 8 semesters. Additionally, the State Employees' Credit Union Foundation also offers a scholarship for those who will attend a North Carolina Community College (its value is up to $5,000 over 4 consecutive semesters.)
If you're planning on attending a two- or four-year North Carolina college and you're a resident of the state, you can apply for a Golden LEAF Scholars Program. The four-year award is larger than the two-year, but the requirements are more stringent (for example, you must be a resident of a rural area.) This grant provides up to $750 per semester for the two-year program and up to $3,000 for the four-year program.
Merit-Based
If you've done particularly well in school, there are scholarships to reward you for a job well done. Such is the case for the award offered by the Council for Exceptional Children which gives gifted students with disabilities the opportunity to receive monetary compensation for excellent academic records. Between five and ten $500 scholarships are given annually.
Profession-Specific
If you're interested in a career in dentistry, medicine, or optometry, the State of North Carolina offers North Carolina residents tuition through their Contract Programs in Dentistry, Medicine, & Optometry. If you plan on enrolling at Meharry Medical College, Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Southern College of Optometry, the University of Alabama, Birmingham, or the University of Houston, you could receive an award. Contact the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority, 800-700-1775, x313 for specific award information (it changes annually.)
For those state residents who plan on majoring in criminal justice, there are North Carolina Sheriffs Association Undergraduate Criminal Justice Scholarships available to those who attend:

- East Carolina University
- Elizabeth City State University
- Fayetteville State University
- North Carolina Central University
- North Carolina State University
- University of North Carolina at Charlotte
- University of North Carolina at Pembroke
- University of North Carolina at Wilmington
- Western Carolina University
The face value of these scholarships is $2,000 (over 2 semesters) and ten are given each year. Check the financial aid office of any of the abovementioned universities for more information.
For those who live in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina and plan on enrolling at a state institute of higher education, the Assistance League of the Triangle Scholarship Program offers $1,000 to offset their tuition costs.
If you're interested in pursuing a career in native plant research, there are two Shinn Grant awards of up to $1,000 each available to graduate students who attend North Carolina universities and colleges or undergraduate students who are working on projects with an advisor.
Institute-Specific
If you are enrolled at one of North Carolina's community colleges, you can try for monies from a NC Community College Grant & Loan Program which are based on financial need. There are about 13,000 grants available each year.
State-resident students who enroll as full-time freshmen at one of The University of North Carolina's constituent institutions could be eligible for one of the Jagannathan Scholarships. Each scholarship is worth a maximum of $3,500 and cannot exceed the financial need of the recipient.
Students at eligible North Carolina community colleges may be able to receive Progress Energy Scholarship Program monies. These are available to NC residents who are already enrolled or plan to enroll at Cape Fear Community College, Fayetteville Technical Community College, or Wake Technical Community College in an approved major. Each college receives $15,000 to divide among all the scholarship recipients.
Privately Offered
Crumley and Associates, a North Carolina law firm, offers a "Crib to College Scholarship" for students who have GPAs of 3.0 or above, who are graduating from a NC high school, and who have enrolled at an accredited technical school, university, or community college. This scholarship will provide financial assistance of $1,000 to five recipients; each recipient will also receive a laptop computer.
The Wachovia Technical Scholarship Program is offered to financially-needy students who are already enrolled in two-year technical programs. Over 100 $500 scholarships ($250/semester) are given yearly. The financial aid office at your community college will have more information on this scholarship, as there is no special application to fill out for consideration.
The North Carolina 4-H Development Fund Scholarships are available to students enrolling as undergraduates or juniors (if transferring from a community college) at a four-year accredited NC college or university. Students receive between $500 and $2,500, and some awards are renewable.
