  2. Charles Oakley Says:

    Charles Oakley approve of tabula rasa. Charles Oakley worried that he was going to have to start punching faces.

  3. John McAuliff Says:

    Dear voters and fellow candidates,

    I am a candidate for this scholarship, and was recently informed that the first round of voting was rigged to benefit certain people.

    These people are still allowed to run for the $10,000 scholarship. Am I the only one with concerns here? If so, feel free to shut me up, but if you are a candidate who did NOT cheat and feel like those who did or benefited from cheating should be disqualified, join me in sending a letter to [email redacted] to request just that.

    Should those who resisted the temptation to cheat be given the same chance to win as those who cheated? I don’t think so, and if you agree, then send them a letter or comment here!

    If you disagree, still comment here, I’d love to discuss it.

    Best wishes to the other candidates. I’m sorry we are in this position.

    Thanks for reading,

    John C. McAuliff

    ~~~
    Ed note: we respond politely to emails, but do you really expect us to publish a comment telling people to bombard our inbox with hate emails? IMHO that is every bit as bad as cheating is. We welcome the discourse here & try to read everything, but it doesn’t mean we enjoy receiving hate emails!
  4. Devil Shamdevil Says:
    Go Ben!
  5. Ron Swanson Says:
    You thought u could take down my son with cheating. Why I guess you thought wrong. Us Swansons are known for two things. Mustaches and winning Scholarship competitions. #TeamSwanson
  6. Joann Oleary Says:
    Delana Lefevers deserves this scholarship. She is a single mom with little help from her ex. She is working full time, and going to school full time and taking care of three young children. Please vote for Delana.
    She deserves the scholarship
  7. Andreas D'Wurst Says:
    The Rufus, the rufus, the rufus on fire! #TeamSwanson
  8. Jason Whitlock Says:
    I voted for Benjamin
  9. Stef Says:
    While I applaud the efforts of all of these bloggers, vote for CAMILLE BEREDJICK. Her blog, gaywrites.org, is an innovative and incredible work that has changed lives forever. Camille manages content multiple times daily to help others, share stories, and raise awareness about LGBT community through skilled journalism. If you care about equality, happiness, progress, and social agendas, vote for Camille. She is an inspiration to us all.
  10. Catherine Says:
    Team Camille all the way!
    Thanks for resetting the count, but I tend to agree with John’s comment on the fairness of keeping in those who benefited from fraud… The whole thing feels a little tainted now.
    Also, I still think that blogs with ad revenue or sponsors should not be eligible in the first place.
    Good luck to all, play fair!
  11. ali holden Says:
    Good luck David! Your work is inspiring and needed xoxo
  12. Julie Curtis Says:
    I host a public affairs program that airs on six Clear Channel radio stations. Last year I interviewed David Shiffman. What a delightful, knowledgeable, articulate guest!
  13. FrugalBeautiful Fan Says:
    Vote for Shannyn Allan! Giving her a scholarship will be an investment not only to her future but the future of many peoples lives as Shannyn is a starting philanthropist with others in mind at all times! She is here to make the world a better place!
  14. Joshua Priemski Says:
    My favorite part of this? Ben didn’t cheat, despite leading the way with over 65,000 votes. Two weeks is a long time. I’d be shocked if he didn’t double that.
    If you’re accessible, kind, hardworking, and enjoy networking as much as Ben does, you develop quite a following. Those 1.8K followers on Twitter aren’t for nothing. And the amount of support he’s received from the Twitter community? The Charlotte Bobcats, an NBA team he interned for, also tweeted support and a link.
    Hard work pays off.
    #TEAMSWANSON
  15. Christa Says:
    I have to say I agree with John. I’ve seen similar problems with voting competitions like this, and have seen votes been reset due to cheating and I’ve also seen the offending parties be removed from the competition.
    If they’re going to cheat for a scholarship instead of playing fair, don’t you think that means they’re also more likely to cheat in school, and lie to get what they think they deserve?
    IMHO, I don’t think they deserve to be in the running.
  16. Joy Says:
    Those caught cheating should be disqualified! In no way should they still be in the running. That is absolute insanity.
  17. Bill Goldthorp Says:
    I am voting for Camille Beredjick, the french dream.
  18. rigged Says:
    I think this is rigged.
  19. Judith Chambers Says:
    My vote is hands down for Camille Beredjick— such a remarkable blog.
    Real imagination, wit, and intelligence.
  20. Mark Lamprecht Says:
    I’m thankful that the voting was reset. I’m not sure where I am with John’s concerns that those who had (or did?) ballot stuffing on their behalf be allowed to continue in the contest. I certainly understand his concern though and if those who benefited from ballot stuffing were disqualified it would probably help avoid such problems in the future.
    I do have one important problem though.
    I and a few of my friends (that I’ve heard from) have not been able to vote today as part of our allotted one vote per day. Please help fix this issue so that voting may go forward.
  21. Josh Says:
    VOTED for Brian. Anyone who can blog about the Pirates without crying themselves to sleep every night deserves to win!
  22. Sneak Says:
    All about #TeamSwanson. Nobody brings out the caps lock better.
  23. Cath Says:
    Voted for DAVID SHIFFMAN. Love his blog and have loved sharks since I wanted to grow up and become Eugenie Clark. A vote for Shiffman is a vote for the oceans that support us all.
  24. Ryan Says:
    David Shiffman – The oceans need our help.
  25. Mary Says:
    Agree with Mark that we sometimes have trouble voting our one vote per day. As well, it seems that if several people live in one household and have different computers but go through the same router, we only have one collective vote. Can you confirm?
    Thank you,
    Mary
    ~~~

    Ed response: Voting is once per day & yes we had to limit it based on IPs. The other voting script didn’t do that & we had 100,000 bot-driven votes in a day…which is absurd when one considers that the vote count total after 2 days of a new voting script is 6,642 votes.

  26. Ayisha Hassanali Says:

    David Shiffman writes a very informative, well-thought out blog about a subject with a greater environmental and ecologogical impact than most people realize. Shiffman’s blog is based on the most current events and research and he addresses events that his readers want answers about. Wishing Mr Shiffman all the best for this scholarship!

  27. Holly Says:

    I was coming in for my daily vote for Kendra Lay yet can not vote.

    ~~~
    Ed note: unless you already voted in the last 24 hours (or someone else from your house voted) you should be able to vote. The voting renews every 24 hours though, rather than once per calendar day.
  28. Marc Says:
    Vote for David Shiffman’s blog.
  29. Phuong Dang Says:
    I vote for John McAuliff. Good luck to him!
  30. Team Heather Says:
    Vote for Heather Cohen. Her blog site is excellent!!!!!
  31. Marla Silverman Says:
    I am voting for David Schiffman, our oceans need to remain a source of food and nourishment and the sharks need to remain part of our oceans too. My niece Stephanie created a video for school regarding the fact that we over-fishing sharks.
  32. Ali Holden Says:
    Go David! Between the two of us we have almost ten thousand twitter followers! I love sharks and I love your blog!
  33. Russell Ray Says:
    I am very disappointed that everyone was “reset” and that the offender(s) are still allowed to remain. VERY poor way to run a contest so important as this.
    If you knew cheating was happening, you clearly knew who it involved. To allow them to remain makes the contest appear rigged, as if those in the lead without cheating were too far ahead so “claim” cheating just to reset the contest. You have forever tainted any results.
    Expose the cheat(s). Remove them from running. And once again restart the contest from zero with a fair amount of time allowed.
    Best wishes to Ben Swanson Team
  34. Jim Swanson Says:
    To the person who said that Ben Swanson had over 60,000 votes without cheating… where are his 60,000 votes now? Don’t kid yourself.
    I don’t think finalists should be punished for the cheating that occurred in the previous voting. There’s no way to know if they were cheating directly, or if someone was doing it on their behalf and without their knowledge or control.
  35. Jacob Says:
    Who let the dogs out?
    Ben Swanson, that’s who.
  36. TJ Says:
    I don’t think they should be disqualified bc you have no way of proving if it was that person that was cheating, or if their friends were stuffing the ballots. They don’t have control over the voters.
    @mark its every 24 hrs, so depending on when you voted after the new format was introduced is when you can vote again. So, if you voted at 7 pm yesterday, you can’t vote until 7pm today.
  37. G. Wallace, Oregon Says:
    I quite agree that any candidate who is found to have personally cheated should be disqualified. But we should not punish those whose writing instills such passion in the reader that they feel driven to vote dozens of times on the author’s behalf, breaching a system that is patently flawed.
    It’s clear now that ‘vote-stuffing’ was widespread, and probably helped boost the counts for than a couple of the leading entrants last time around. Yet for all we know, it could have been happening on a smaller scale to benefit those who had fewer votes, too. As the great Ben Swanson once remarked, “Why should I be held responsible for something I have no control over?” Wise words, I’m sure you’ll agree.
  38. Stephen Jackson Says:
    Ben Swanson makes love to pressure. That’s why he’ll win this thing.
  39. Devin Kharpertian Says:
    To say that those who benefited from voters stuffing the box should be eliminated is ridiculous. There’s no evidence that they did it directly, or asked other people to do it on their behalf (except in Deanna’s case – bazinga http://getonlinevotes.com/2011-college-blogging-scholarship-delana-lefevers/comment-page-1/#comment-184711). It’s just as likely (if not moreso) that some tech-savvy friends wanted to help their man/woman/other score 10 grand.
    Should there be a recount? Absolutely. But it comes off as just as dirty and shameless for the other bloggers to call for the removal of their competition without sufficient evidence that it was directly their competition that caused the ballot stuffing.
    Now go vote for Ben Swanson.
  40. Devin Kharpertian Says:
    Sorry – Delana, not Deanna.
  41. brandon lynd Says:
    I voted for brian. Lets go bucs. -beemoney97
  42. Delana Lefevers Says:
    @Devin,
    I don’t understand why the hostility toward me specifically, other than the fact that “the great Ben Swanson” has decided to try to drag my name through the mud. I can’t post repeatedly on my blog about this competition because that is how I make my living and I can’t risk alienating my readers. Asking strangers on Twitter to retweet your requests for votes is no different than asking strangers somewhere else to vote for you. Let’s be adults – the organizers of this competition are aware of the fact that I have posted requests for votes elsewhere and I have not been informed that that is against the rules, other than by plenty of Ben Swanson supporters who have called me names, harassed me and otherwise made my life very unpleasant. This contest has become such a pain for me because of you people that I am not even actively campaigning for it anymore for fear that you all will just never leave me alone. Please back off.
  43. Southern Fried Scientist Says:
    In these dark and troubled times, in a world gone mad, one man stands up for truth, hope, and drag-reducing dermal teeth. Only one contestant lives every week as if it were Shark Week.
    Vote Shiffman.
  44. Mary Says:
    Thank you Ed for clarifying especially re the 24 hour rather than calendar day cycle. Helpful. But the other issue re a household with multiple people and computers only being able to vote once due to tracking IP address… Isn’t IP address attached to a computer not a router that a lot of people may use? It would make sense to restrict each computer to one vote but not to restrict a router which may have multiple users, to one vote.
    Mary
  45. Ginny Says:
    I, too, feel that those who rigged the votes should not be able to win!
    John did a fantastic job and should win on the merits of his blog!!!
  46. KJ_NBA Says:
    Ben Swanson got my vote. Who cheated?
  47. lewis stewart Says:
    Hope you win!
  48. Jared Says:
    Here’s a comment from one savvy blogger in response to the votes being reset:
    “wow so unfair… i voted literally hundreds of times”
    And another in reference to voting more than once:
    “It’s limited for me, although since I’m on campus, every time I go to a new computer, I vote again anyway.”
    Please remember that the spirit of the contest is to reward a scholarship to a deserving student. Let’s not cheapen that cause.
  49. Jim Says:
    I understand why the IP addresses had to be limited, but one problem is that all the internet traffic at my office is directed through a proxy by our parent company. As a result, only one vote counts for the entire office! A lot of my co-workers want to vote, but they can’t!
    ~~~

    Ed. note: if they want to vote, but can’t at work, then they could vote when they get home in the evening.

  50. misa Says:

    I voted for david…..the sharks are very important to us cause they control all ecosystem in seas,without them everything would be messed up….please vote for David Shiffman

  51. Laura Morgan Says:

    Go Camille!

  52. zoe Says:

    Good luck to David – my vote will always go to those who love sharks as much as I do

  61. O'Doyle Says:

    O’Doyle rules! O’Doyle rules! O’Doyle rules!

  62. Matthew Roth Says:

    Voted for my dawg Ben. And I’m gonna do it again tomorrow. And the next day. Until the voting is closed. All because he’s my dawg.

  63. Desmazieres Says:

    As a creative director working for more than 30 years for french, american , and japanese advertising agencies, I ‘ve no hesitation : Miss Camille Beredjick’s the best.

  64. June Taylor Says:

    We need humanitarians like David Shiffman who care if the shark population is diminishing. His commitment as a shark advocate along with his effort to work for the conservation of sharks (protect them from human harm) proves that he is prepared to defend them from extinction. If humans do not stop killing sharks our planet will be in serious trouble. Sharks remove the sick and dead or dying fish keeping fish populations healthy and the ocean free of excessive decay. Eliminate the sharks and the ocean becomes unbalanced and will begin its journey of death. Research indicates that about 100 million sharks are killed each year by humans — roughly 11,000 sharks every hour!!!!!!! around the clock [source: HSUS]. These numbers may even be on the low side since the estimate is based only on the reported catch numbers. It’s likely that many sharks are caught without being reported. Commercial fishing accounts for a large part of the overall number of sharks caught. Also, shark sportfishing ranks high as second to commercial fishing. If the ocean is decayed it will die…without the ocean…we cease to exist!

  65. brandon lynd Says:

    BRIAN make a twitter dude and tweet all the pirates players andaskthemto reyweet it amd you will gett viotes!

  66. Charles Heal Says:

    David Shiffman all the way – I am an ecologist by profession and qualification and I salute the hard work and commitment that he shows.

  67. Robert Sakovich Says:

    I think anybody who came on here boasting about how their candidate didn’t cheat, but now the total vote count is around one sixth of the votes their candidate alone had previously, should be bold enough to say they were wrong and that their candidate obviously was receiving bogus votes.

    The sad thing is that by posting comments like that and not retracting when proven wrong only winds up affecting how people think of Ben Swanson and his blog. Meanwhile, you guys get to rant and rave and just walk away without having to deal with any of the mess that you helped to create. Is that really how you want to honor Ben and the work that you say you aprpeciate so much?

  68. Nat Says:

    For those who believed that the contest was rigged, that’s bull. Obviously, the person in the lead has a large support for his work, mainly because his work is inspiring and that, of course, was enough for people to vote for him. Please don’t make silly excuses just because you are not in the lead. It’s a fair game for everyone.

  69. Ron Says:

    Worthy! Vote! Vote! Vote! – per batsped

  70. Ron Says:

    Awesome! Do It! Love Bennies… Snort! bat

  71. Sharon Peppers Says:

    David, Thank you for working to educate everyone about the importance of sharks, and the critical role they perform in our World’s oceans. Good Luck, to you. Sharon Peppers

  72. David Fucillo Says:

    #TeamBen

  73. Jackie Fernandez Says:

    I just revoted for you Heather. Good luck!!

  74. Ryan Says:

    Yea! Shiffman leading!

    Some of the sporting blogs (whose owners are in this competition are pretty good) but the oceans need our support more than sports… and for that I voted for Shiffman.

    If you get the grant, please keep to your word dude… and good luck!

  75. Janelle Says:

    I vote for Chelsea Long!!!<3

  76. Ben Rainbow Says:

    David writes the only blog that I regularly read and he seems to connect to a worldwide audience. I can’t speak for all the other bloggers, I just know that this scholarship fund could not go towards a more worthy cause. For me it’s not just a vote for David Shiffman, but a vote for shark conservation.

  77. Clay Mitchell Says:

    Sharks are all nice and good, but there are no other souls on this planet that are more tortured and down trodden than the fans of small market NBA teams.

    #TeamSwanson

  78. Stacey Says:

    David Shiffman all the way! Great blogger, great scientist, great person. He totally deserves this!

  79. mary foley Says:

    i voted for David Shippman

  80. TJ Says:

    They changed the voting format. So why is everyone still talking about it? Obviously they haven’t DQed anyone, and don’t plan on it. Move on.

  81. Jasminder Says:

    What a silly way to decide who wins $10 000. That being said, I voted for the shark guy.

  82. Scott Elyard Says:

    Voted for Shiffman, because sharks are important, too.

  83. Meg Grace Says:

    #TeamShiffman

  84. Reinet Kemp Says:

    I vote for David. If our oceans’ ecosystems collapse, so will those of our world. Sharks are a vital part of the oceans to keep a balance – like lions and hyenas in the wild on land. Don’t just destroy what you don’t understand.

  85. Olivia Meylan Says:

    🙂

  86. purple reef Says:

    Sharks vulnerable to overfishing because:
    Long time to sexual maturity
    Long gestations
    Small number of offspring
    Breed only every 2nd or 3rd year

    Sharks are the Oceans and Reefs Manager without the whole ecosystem will collapse

  87. Bhaskar Says:

    Go John McAuliff

  88. Christinna Says:

    I vote for the oceans, for the future and the great job done by DAVID SHIFFMAN. My vote is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

  89. Sam Says:

    The way of determining the winner of this scholarship is total BS. It doesn’t go to the best blogger, it goes to the blogger with the largest group of family and friends. So, what this really amounts to is a popularity contest!

  90. Alike Says:

    I vote for David Shiffman because I care about his Shark Project. No more Sharks = no more oxygen = no more life…! We should all care about the environment, there is only 1 plantet.

  91. jano haddad Says:

    GOOD KUCK DAVID!!!

  92. Kevin Z Says:

    I’ve known David Shiffman for at least 2 years and consider him a worthy science communication colleague. He and his cobloggers at Southern Fried Science have been a force for the oceans and have raised thousands of dollars using their blog for conservation and ocean education in poverty stricken schools.

    This scholarship, should he win it, will go a long ways to help his doctorate studies in shark conservation but will also contribute to his extensive outreach for shark conservation and spreading love and admiration for the oceans via blogging and social media, but also the many face-to-face outreach he has with the public and schools.

  93. Laura Says:

    I voted for David Shiffman because, as a fellow marine scientist, I believe that education is the most powerful tool when it comes to conservation. By informing and explaining his work, and its importance, he engages people in marine science that might not otherwise, and ultimately helps get people behind the cause of saving our oceans. Go David Shiffman!

  94. Jessica Says:

    Where are the links to their blogs? Why can’t we judge for ourselves based on their content? Am I missing something?

    ~~~
    Ed note: indeed you are missing something. Didn’t you see the “Want to know who writes which blog? Please check out all the blogs here” part of the post?
  95. Lindsay Tucker Says:
    Good luck David, your dedication deserves
    recognition.
  96. Bob Says:
    As a pirate, I can not begin to describe how useful David’s Blog has been to my personal life. One can not know enough about shark going-ons in my profession. Thank you David S.
  97. Ben Says:
    I vote for David and shark conservation!
  98. Marina Says:
    As a professional ecologist, educator and passionate conservationist, I salute and support David Shiffman.
  99. Cierra Says:
    Easy choice! David & the sharks.
  100. Krysta Says:
    David Shiffman…enough said! 🙂
  101. AC Says:
    Why are you allowing comments on a scholarship vote page? I would think that is not very professional. Consider turning comments off for next year’s scholarship vote.
  102. Ryan Says:
    Hey to all the sports fans out there… you should vote for David Shiffman as well!
    Here’s why:
    The sharks support the ocean,
    the ocean supports life and mankind
    mankind brings you your sports!
    Take away any one of the above links and no sports!
    Cheers!
  103. Tracy Says:
    David inspires others with his passion for sharks. My daughter met him at SeaCamp three years ago and has not stopped talking about sharks since then. She is considering career options that will allow her to pursue her interest, in large part due to David’s influence.
  104. Trinh Duy Luan Says:
    I vote for John McAuliff.
  105. Rebekah Johnston Says:
    David Shiffman!
  106. Alike Says:
    For the Sharks! For David Shiffman!
  107. Ruth Says:
    I’m voting for David. As a diver I encounter these wonderful creatures but at the end of the day have to see the harbor wall in a fishing village in Oman that we dive from littered with dead sharks over 45 last Friday alone.
    Without the work of people like David the ecosystem that we are so dependent on could collapse because one of the apex predators in the sea is removed
    Vote oft David Shiffman
  108. Emily Says:
    As a fan of all things ocean (definitely including sharks), I heartily support David Shiffman!
  109. Rae Wainwright Says:
    As an objective reader who has taken the time to look through the blogs of the top three contestants, I have to say that I voted for John McAuliff’s Road Trip of Passage blog. While David Shiffman’s blog was very interesting to read, I found John McAuliff’s much more inspiring. The choice is really between giving someone 10,000 dollars who already has money and is already on a chosen path, and giving that money to someone who is about to pick a direction and further explore. The unique find of someone who is courageous enough to step outside the very narrow lines of what is expected of young people these days is something extraordinary to see, and most definitely something worth encouraging.
  110. Judith Chambers Says:
    Camille’s blog is superb!
  111. Art Margiotta Says:
    I have tried to vote for David Shiffman and cannot no matter how I log in. In fact, I cannot vote for any of the individual candidates;
    When placing the cursor over the name, near the name, or anywhere on the text of names under “Who Should Win the Blogging Scholarship in 2011?”, no action options are given.
    Is there another way I can cast my vote?
    Thanks in advance to whoever can help. And good luck to all the candidates!
    ~~~

    Ed. Note: There have been over 30,000 votes cast so far. About the only thing that would block voting would be if someone else was using your router / IP address & voted, or if you already recently cast a vote.

  112. Monica Says:

    My biggest vote will go to the candidate who has an action plan to eliminate shark finning worldwide. Research is good, but sharks are dying faster than we can study them. This will involve directly challenging those who purchase and sell shark finns.

    Please share.

  113. Trinh Duy Luan Says:

    I vote for John McAuliff

  114. Patric Douglas Says:

    It has come to this. The venerated Shark Diver blog offering up jewel clad string bikini images to capture the last few of you out there who have not yet voted for David Shiffman.

    Who’s David you ask?

    Only one of the smartest science bloggers out there and oh, so close, to winning a much needed $10,000 blogging scholarship so he can continue to be innovative and science-y.

    http://sharkdivers.blogspot.com/2011/11/micro-bikini.html

  115. Shark Hater Says:

    Basketball brings joy to people, Sharks kill people. Vote Ben Swanson.

  116. Christinna Says:

    For David and shark conservation!He is an ecologist, educator and does an amazing job.
    Go Shiffman! Good luck, from Rio de Janeiro.

  117. Kim Hanson Says:

    Sharks are beautiful creatures and deserve conservation. They keep balance within the oceans. We need to learn more about them via research. I religiously vote for David Shiffman because of this need. Every bit of information learned and shared is important.

  118. Caitlin Says:

    David Shiffman

  119. JJ Says:

    Vote for David Shiffman. David is a fantastic scientist and a great blogger. Vote for something that will actually help change the world, rather than a glorified iSpy player like some of the bloggers are.

  120. Aliona Says:

    Vote for David Shiffman!! 🙂
